Counting With The Very Hungry Caterpillar App
By Night and Day Studios
Age Recommendation 4+ years.
A classic storybook in an app. Kids will delight in the familiar sight of the hungry caterpillar and the foods he loves to eat. Beautiful pictures by Eric Carle and music by Mozart give the app a certain character staying true to the feeling of the original story.
Early maths concepts such as sorting, identifying, counting, number recognition and an opportunity to work on listening skills are all evident here. The game consist of five levels of play, each one a little harder than the previous. Although the app has a 4+ recommendation, 2’s would certainly enjoy it and find some of the levels achievable. Throughout the game it allows kids to make mistakes and then corrects them showing where they went wrong.
Level one is simple counting where the child must touch all foods on the screen to get the correct answer. Level two the child must eat only the food items the narrator tells them. Level three the child must now eat only the amount asked from many on the screen, careful counting is needed here. Level four the child must eat a certain number of items from a group of differing foods with counting, sorting and identifying skills combined here. Level five is a game where all previous levels come together. Kids must see how many instructions they can follow correctly before the timer runs out.
In the options menu you can turn music on or off, have sequential or random gameplay and have voiceover active or inactive. A great app for littlies.
