Soccerball Cake or Football Cake if You’re English

Yousoccerball cake Will Need:
2 cake packet mixes
semi-circled cake tin, pudding steamer or pyrex dish approx 20cm in diameter
black fondant
a hexagonal shape cut out of cardboard, 2.5cm sides is a good size
cocoa powder
cake base with skewers dug into it to impale the cake (I used 3)
coconut and green food colouring for grass

Vienna Cream for icing:
1 ¾ cups icing sugar
125g butter
2 tbsp milk

  1. Bake cakes as round a shape as possible, which can be achieved by finding that perfect semi-circle baking tin or bowl, and lining it with baking paper that has been scrunched a few times to make it mould to the edges better. When cool judge how much you need to slice off to make them best fit together, and carefully doing so, saving any off cuts to wedge into any large gaps.
  2. Make icing – Vienna Cream is a great icing to use as it is almost white. Beat the soft butter for a good few minutes until almost white. Add half the sifted icing sugar, beat. Add the milk, beat. Then add the remaining icing.
  3. Place the bottom cake onto the spears, give it a thin layer of icing (or jam is another good cake glue) and stick the top half on. Ice it as evenly as you can, filling and wrinkles or holes, and when all icing is on the cake, go over it with a hot knife dipped in a mug of boiling water to help smooth it out.
  4. Roll out the fondant as thinly as you can, and using your cardboard shape cut out a patch. Place it on the cake (planning here will make it easier – a good place to start is near the bottom so you can build up and over the cake) and firmly press it into the icing so it is taking the shape of the ball.
  5. Using your cardboard shape, dip one edge into the cocoa powder, poured into a small bowl or saucer. Print a line going vertically up from each corner of the hexagon to make the angles, continuing on until you can stick more patches on. Having a picture to follow will help immensely.
  6. To make the pitch, get half a cup of descinated coconut in a plastic container with a lid and add a good squirt of green food colouring. Shake until the colour has run though it all and when ready pour all around the edges underneath the ball.

Make it the night before!!!
