There’s some preliminary research, from a range of disciplines indicating that EMR exposure, especially for children could have some harmful effects.

So much so that in 2011 the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as Type 2B Possible Carcinogen (possible cancer risk to humans).

It’s important to note that this classification was based on research that indicated that there could be some possible long-term adverse health effects from EMR exposure, such as those emitted from mobile phones. We don’t yet have conclusive scientific evidence.

The WHO suggests that we adopt a precautionary approach to mobile devices and WiFi exposure.

TECH TIPS-
Limit exposure to WiFi and mobile devices– turn of Internet routers when they’re not needed (i.e. overnight), switch mobile devices to airplane mode when children are playing them and keep modems away from high-traffic areas of your home (or classroom) (for example, out of bedrooms or sleeping areas) and don’t have transmitting devices in bedrooms (tech-free zones).

Increase the Distance Between You and the Device. Use a handset on your mobile phone, place tablets in cases and leave them at least 40cm away from your body, keep devices away from your physical body (remember smartphones are still emitting EMR when they’re switched on but not being used).

“Wire Up” when you can. Hardwire devices where possible and switch off Wifi when it’s not in use.
