Minecraft with the Kids as Ruby Cobblestone

My kids watch Minecraft on Youtube. The conditions? They are only allowed to watch the characters Stampy Cat and Diamond Minecart. These two young men, if I could meet them I would shake their hands. Their short videos on Minecraft are highly child friendly (I have not heard a swear word yet) and their stories engaging and mindful to their young audience.

Those that have worked with me in the childcare education sector know that I love a bit of imaginary play. I will throw myself with gusto into the story, song or play experience. Drama is in my soul. I have often told those that have attended one of my Toolbox or School Readiness talks that I am in the business of educating children because NIDA rejected me! Well… not exactly, BUT I would of loved to have gone there!

It was last week when I was singing the praises of these two young men that my husband commented “you could do what they do”. After giving it some thought I decided I would have a crack at it. At the very least it was a bit of fun with the kids!

Well not only have we found it fun producing these videos as a family, but a great opportunity that gets the kids working closely together through script creation which involves storyline, problem solving, thinking ahead, and of course creativity. There’s also editing, sourcing music, sound effects, all things that are actually not Minecraft focused, but skills they can use with many other interests.

Who knows how long the kids and I will do this together, but for now we are having loads of fun. I have put our first videos here for anyone who would like a laugh (especially if you know me). So here it is, Minecraft with the kids as Ruby Cobblestone.
