Red Cabbage Science Experiment

Red cabbage water is a natural pH indicator so when it is mixed with acids or bases it will change colour. All you need for this experiment is:

  • 1/4 red cabbage chopped up
  • 4 clear cups
  • spoons for everyone
  • lemon juice
  • vinegar
  • bicarb soda or baking soda
  • detergent
  • an old towel

Boil the cabbage in 750ml water for about 7-8 minutes, drain and keep the water in a spouted bowl. Allow to cool. On the old towel (it will get a bit messy) pour the purple water evenly into the cups and then mix a couple of spoons of each the lemon juice and vinegar (acids) and the bicarb and detergent (bases) into each cup, stir and watch the colour change.

Red Cabbage Science Experiment4When acids and bases are mixed together they react in a pretty cool way. So when you have finished the first part of the experiment add bicarb soda to the lemon and vinegar cups, mix it up and see what happens. Have a bit of fun mixing this with that and making purple eruptions! Ensure you remember to put that old towel underneath your glass, as you’re going to need it!
